There’s a common saying by Lao Tzu that goes like this…“The Journey Of A Thousand Miles Begins With One Step.” As a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints it’s far more appropriate to say…
“The Mission of Thousands of Miles Begins With One Leap of Faith.”
~ Laura Friedman
Today is Anziano Michael Friedman’s day to take that first leap of faith. One could argue that putting in his mission papers was a leap of faith. I disagree. Putting in his mission papers was a step of faith. Preparing for his mission – doctors, consulate, clothes, luggage – were each a step of faith. Giving his farewell talk in front of the church, his family and friends was a step of faith. Attending his Open House with a packed home full of friends and family all there to say goodbye and support him was a step of faith. Packing the night before (and morning of!) his departure date was a step of faith. Driving to the airport, saying goodbye to those closest to him, handing his cell phone to his sister – were each a step of faith.
Turning to walk through airport security and leaving EVERYTHING behind to solely serve God for 2 years was the LEAP OF FAITH.
It was a defining moment, forever forging an even deeper relationship with God. I am grateful for the man Michael is, for the choices he makes in life and will make in life, for his unwavering believe and faith in Jesus Christ.
Every place that the sole of your foot shall tread upon, that have I given unto you, … There shall not any man be able to stand before thee all the days of thy life: as I was with Moses, so I will be with thee: I will not fail thee, nor forsake thee. Be strong and of a good courage … Only be thou strong and very courageous, that thou mayest observe to do according to all the law … turn not from it to the right hand or to the left, that thou mayest prosper whithersoever thou goest. This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success. Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the Lord thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.
